Welcome
132 attendants of the 4th Automotive Seminar received a heartily welcome by Alexander Kruse, head of painting dept. at
DaimlerChrysler’s Bremen plant. He said, Class A surface is a condition precedent with passenger car body parts. SMC is what is called a carrier of technology (Technologieträger), provides Class A,
good natured crash behaviour, stiffness and other benefitial properties not yet being utilized. Dr Kruse underlined the gaining importance of SMC in car production. Key data of the Bremen plant: 250.000
vehicles p.a., 15.500 employees, C-Class (no. 1), T-Class, SL, SLK, CLK.

Brand New Applications of SMC, BMC and TMC in Automotive
Papers from Michael Sommer always reflect the latest development in SMC in the automotive industry. We saw numerous pictures of the
Chrysler Crossfire (rear spoiler and windshield frame), Renault Kangoo (inner roof boxes), BMW Z4 (hardtop), BMW M3 CSL (decklid), BMW 645 Ci (decklid for Coupé and Convertible). He underlined the
feasibility of up to 500.000 rocker covers made of TMC (injection moulded) and the paintability: online, inline, offline - anything goes with SMC/BMC. ...more

Application of SMC Parts at Karmann - The Point of View of a Consultant
Hans Haug gave an overview about the application of SMC parts at Karmann. Karmann, being the first user of SMC in a German car: the
water drip pan in the Karmann Ghia was made of SMC (late 60s), is applying SMC for decklids and convertible soft roof panels (Renault Megane, Mercedes CLK, Audi A4) as well as for spoilers (Chrysler
Crossfire) and windshield frames. The Crossfire spoiler is a hybrid structure of SMC (outer) and steel (inner) being glued with a PU-adhesive bond - a fine example of a SMC/steel hybrid
design. ...more: Part 1 Part 2

Innovative Ultra Light SMC Technologies
“We’ve learned a lot from Triple C!” Dr Schuh emphazised that the joint development of DaimlerChrysler, DSM,
Menzolit-Fibron and Peguform has led to a better understanding of the SMC process and to process optimization. Additional work has to be done in order to improve the economic efficiency. With regard to
low weight components a joint project together with Menzolit-Fibron and Volkswagen “ AdvancedSMC” has proven: High Performance Composite Technology is feasible for increased volume
production, with high surface quality, reproduceable. ...more: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

European Composite Recycling Concept - The “Green FRP Recycling Label”
Disposing composite parts at the dampsite (landfill), as it is the case with approx. 60% today, will no longer be legally possible
by the end of 2004. The composites industry has established a company called “European Composite Recycling Service Company (ECRC)”, headoffice is Brussels. Operation will start 1 March 2004.
Recycling is understood as Waste Management. ECRC will work together with companies like Ercom and MCR, the majority, however, of SMC waste will have its outlet with the cement industry. Fortunately the
composition of SMC ash fits nicely to the composition of cement ...more

The Volvo Use of Composite - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
“SMC is not dead at all - it’s very healthy and we will see a lot of progress!” said Staffan Ek. Volvo has almost
40 years experience in SMC car application. Volvo’s V70 is equipped with an SMC tailgate, high volume production is feasible. The upper tailgate of the XC90 is made of SMC and will carry up to 25
antennas. Light weight SMC will increase in the future, even Carbon fibre composites, well known from racing cars, will penetrate some special passenger cars. Economic efficiency is a challenge: a steel
fender of today is cheaper than 10 years ago. Weight, economy and environment are the key issues. ...more

Eco-Efficiency Analysis of SMC Parts
Eco-Efficiency Analysis (EEA) is more than just a life cycle analysis, said Dr Handels. It also includes the toxicity potential,
risk potential and land use. Together with BASF a EEA was conducted by the EEA working group of the SMC-Alliance. A SMC decklid was compared with decklids made of steel and Aluminium. The decklid made of
SMC shows to be the most eco-efficient alternative. Dr Handels emphasized that the SMC-Alliance wants to start a dialog. Now that such a tool exists, it is much easier to see the effect of changed input
conditions. Proposals from the automotive industry are most welcome ...more

SMC at the Smart Roadster, Experiences and Perspectives

Smart has discovered SMC for it’s Roadster! Dirk Schäfer illustrated the use of SMC for the front hood and the decklid. Quite
a number of improvements are essential for further SMC use in passenger cars (since thermoplastics are coming up even for horizontal parts). Needs: System know-how to be consolidated at the
moulder’s, not one press mould without sensors, data about piercing, data about high-speed tensile test, simulation tool of SMC mould flow ...more

AdvancedSMC - Material Concepts for Lightweight Exterior Vehicle Surfaces

Jürgen Becke informed about a joint development which was carried out with Menzolit-Fibron: the fronthood of the Golf R32 DSG, by applying
AdvancedSMC. The hood design was taken one-by-one from the steel hood, that means, there’s room for improvement. Despite of the very narrow time frame from design to release - the results are very
satisfying. Weight reduction vs. steel: 5,5kg, E-modulus: steel hood is softer, crash behaviour: extremely positive, not one single piece of the hood was flying away, painting: passed all standard
Volkswagen painting jobs ...more: English Text German Text
