AVK-TV Innovation Award 2002
The presentation of 5 innovation awards was one of the highlights of the conference. One of these awards went to
SMC-Alliance-member company Menzolit-Fibron together with MAN, for their joint development work of a low density SMC truck bumper for MAN’s TGA series heavy truck. Bumper weight could be reduced
from 31,5kg to 25kg, or 20 per cent, by using a LD-SMC with a density of 1,45.

Dr. Uwe Bueltjer: Production of GRP and thermosets in Europe
Dr Uwe Bueltjer, General Manager of AVK-TV, addressed the audience with a market survey. He said: Looking backwards to 2001 we have
to realize an unexpected loss of 2,2% in the production of GRP in Europe. Reasons are the bad performance of the automotive industry, the difficulties in the IT-branch and the lack of money of
the communities. In some industries like electrical and automotive headlamps, the weight of the components has been reduced, thus leading to lower amounts of material. For more market date please see
“the Alliance” page …more

Michael Sommer: Latest automobile applications in SMC, BMC and TMC
The author addressed the audience with new applications in Europe and in the USA. In Europe two very exciting SMC applications:
Renault VelSatis with tailgate and front fenders made of SMC, Audi A4 convertible SMC decklid. The paper features some 30 pictures with attractive SMC/BMC applications. It is quite obvious, SMC is coming
up in passenger cars, whereas it holds its strong position within the truck industry ...full story

Dr Anders Sjoegren: An approach towards avoidance of pinholes and blowouts in painted SMC
Dr Anders Sjoegren, Sicomp |
This paper presents results from an on-going research project on pinholes and blowouts in painted SMC parts. The aim is to
generate fundamental understanding of the causes and to facilitate robust manufacturing of SMC body panels with class-A surfaces ...full story

Dr Karlheinz Hoersting: Process reliable production in the SMC process chain – Implementation of SPC and
visualisation techniques
 Dr Karlheinz Hoersting, Menzolit-Fibron
This paper not only shows the implementation of SPC and visualisation techniques in the SMC process chain, it also informs
about the benefits of discipline during all production steps – from the receiving of the raw materials to the shipping of the components. Monitoring, measurability, corrections, training
of the staff, visualisation, tracing, reduction of scrap rate, improving the quality – these are some of the keywords ...full story

Marco Wacker: Characterization of thickening response of class A SMC via different measuring methods
One of the most decisive topics in SMC manufacturing is the thickening reaction. Variations in thickening may lead to changes
in the moulding parameters and to deterioration. This paper show the different measuring methods. Most astonishing result was the large scattering of the measured values obtained from the Helipath
method vs. standard Brookfield viscosimeter. The paper also shows, further investigations are needed to stabelize the SMC thickening reaction ...full story

Christoph Kraemer: Processing additives – additives that improve homogeneity of SMC and BMC
More and more SMC/BMC recipes apply additives in order to improve some of the characteristics. This paper presents two
newly developed additives that (1) reduce the fogging in BMC headlamps at elevated temperatures and (2) improve the colour uniformity of mass-coloured non-painted, pigmented low shrink SMC ...full story

Michael Sommer: Halogen-free flame retardant SMC, BMC, pultrusion and printed circuit board laminates
More stringent flame retardant requirements have been coming up, after several accidents which took place in the past.
SMC/BMC was not involved in these incidents. The severest testing is done for building and construction and for mass transit (underground railways in tunnels), where tests are done in combination
with smoke tests. This paper explains the different fire tests and shows: British Standard 6853, class 2 and 1b are most demanding. SMC and BMC parts for rolling stock and for buildings can be
designed to meet the severest fire and smoke test. State of the art fire protection is halogen-free and puts most emphasis on smoke emission ...full story
