The Seminar for the Electrical/Construction Industry
June 6/7, 2001 at Bergamo - a Summary

This seminar was hosted by ABB SACE, Bergamo. The organisation of the entire symposium was done by Ursula Zarbock , while Ronald Woolley was chairman of the symposion. - Thank you!

Number of participants: 62 - electrical OEMs, raw material suppliers, compound manufacturers and moulders, plus nine speakers. Every participant received a voluminous handbook, containing all (!) lectures in English language.

The purpose of the seminar was an up-date of the recent SMC/BMC technology and a come together. One of the results of the seminar was: there is an ongoing discussion on whether or not SMC/BMC is recyclable and whether or not it should be recycled and who’s going to pay etc. etc. - Hans Kelderman pointed out that, based on the European legislation, there is no time for further discussion. Recycling should have started yesterday, feasibility has been proven

Another result: The Europeans can still learn from the U.S. what marketing means and how we can use it, for a better customer service. Larry Nunnery: Listen to the customer and find out what he needs, instead of selling him high sophisticated products nobody can afford.

This is the programme! of the seminar (pdf file)

Giorgio Icardi (Vetrotex-Saint Gobain)
European SMC market was 190.000t in 1999. BMC: 90.000t. Estimated annual growth is 6%. Competing technologies like GMT/LFT and RTM have higher growth rates. Electrical applications represent the largest part of the market (more than 40%), automotive is on the second place (less than 40%).

Nicola Adamo and Allessandro Tozzi (Lonza Compounds)
Almost every human activity needs electricity! Electrical power needs to be confined by insulating material, and SMC/BMC makes a very good job since 40 years. Ongoing development and improvement (material and process) since then. SMC/BMC offer a large variety of benefits, at reasonably low costs. New application fields: Medium tension, fuell cells.

Rinus van den Berg (DSM-DADC)
This speaker gave an overview of the broad spectrum of DSM’s DADC (Design and Application Development Centre). The profile of DADC includes expertise in design, engineering and testing. This paper touched the construction issue (house construction was under-represented on this seminar!).

Klaus Ahlborn (Mitras Composites)
“Overmoulding technique” was explained in detail. The application of this technique is a perfect marriage of the SMC and the in-moulded metal. Metals chosen for the overmoulding technology are copper and aluminium. This process allows a very compact design for a safe product, at low costs. Klaus Ahlborn announced, that he’s going to leave Mitras.

Michael Ketterer (CEAG)
SMC components e.g. explosion proof lamps do an excellent job in hazardouos aereas:chemical plants or offshore platforms. Definition of “requirements for explosion”, “ignition sources”, “zone classification”. Demands for future development: smaller tolerance gap for surface resistance, no fibre show-up under weathering conditions, no recycling problem.

Hans Kelderman (Ercom)
Ercom has started recycling of SMC/BMC 10 years ago. It is up and running, in Germany, in France and in Italy. Mechanical properties are same as original. Surface aspect: looks different, shows speccles. European legislation defines a very tight time frame: act now! Landfill will not be possible. Contact Ercom GmbH for further queries.

Henri Magnaud (Menzolit France)
Presentation of a new generation of BMC: focus of todays development is on technical, quality and price aspects - environment becomes more and more important. Menzolit offers SMC/BMC with lower VOC (volatile organic compound) emission and higher mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.

Renato Dosmo (ABB SACE)
Is it possible to replace SMC in Moulded Case Circuit Brakers (MCCB) by using thermoplastics? - The author believes that replacing of thermosets by using thermoplastics is a general trend in the industry. He also believes that that thermoplastics are more environmentally friendly, even though a scientific basis for such opinion is missing. The author says that thermoplastics also allow more design flexibility... However: In MCCB housings is no place for thermoplastic material. Temperature behaviour, smoke emission, arc resistance etc. are too bad...

Larry E. Nunnery (BMC Inc.)
BMC - the fastest growing material technology in the world today. A presentation of BMCI. The company is manufacturing 70.000t of BMC p.a. and the “...formulation engineers prides itself in knowing that it designs exactly what is needed for your product to function cost effectively”. Larry says, BMCI sells BMC for automotive headlights that can be directly metallized. Fuel cells: BMC has proven itself ideal to meet the demands of fuel cells. A huge future potential.

Hans Kelderman (Wientjes)
A company presentation. Wientjes produces, besides many other components, street light canopies. The requirements are tough: Lamps have to stand the high winds and must function properly. Design is an important issue.

What do you expect from the internet web site of the SMC-Alliance? Any information you may desire about SMC and BMC will be available from this web site. No other material provides more benefits! - says Hans Dieter Müller, editor and designer of our web site. He’s also the Technical Support Manager of the Alliance.

Antonello Antoniazzi and Romano Elidi (ABB SACE)
No mechanical testing method initiates so controversial discussions as the Izod and Charpy impact test. This lecture proposes a instrumented pendulum impact testing. It reports about the fracture mechanics and the fracture energy release rate. The works is not finalized yet, however it seems, that this is a very powerful tool to improve understanding of the material behaviour at high loading rate. [Sorry for the picture!]
