VDI Plastics in Automotive Engineering 2004

Innovations like Low Density Class-A SMC and Carbon Fibre reinforced AdvancedSMC provide a potential: from niche to low volume applications. Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is just a first step.

Mannheim, Germany. - This years VDI show was focussing on leightweight plastics applications: we saw the worldwide first semistructural carbon fibre reinforced AdvancedSMC part in normal car production. Well, the McLaren is a niche application, however, it is a first step. See the press release.

Carbon fibre composites are now at the transisition between motor sports and road car production. The material is there, a process very similar to the well known SMC moulding technology is there, lightweight car construction has come a serious step closer. - Enjoy the pictures taken at VDI 2004!
