PLASTIC CAR BODIES - today and tomorrow
4th European Automobile Conference, June 11-12, 2001,
Bad Nauheim/Frankfurt

190 experts, including 74 OEMs, from the automobile industry, plastics and component manufacturers came together in Bad Nauheim, the beautiful spa, north of Frankfurt. The SMC-Alliance had a strong position at the show, with an information booth and a composite automobile. Three of the 14 lectures were held by member companies of the European Alliance for SMC.

See the part list of components used for the SMC car of Bad Nauheim conference.

The opening report was given by Fons Harbers (DSM Composite Resins/SMC-Alliance): “The Total Plastics Car Body from SMC”. Fons introduced the Alliance and informed about Ford’s experience and benefits by using SMC for Ford Transit Grlle Opening Panel. Other issues: Renaults Mosaic Front Structure Project, Citroens Berlingo Roof Module, Renaults Avantime body panels, DaimlerChryslers CL Coupe decklid, BMWs filter housing and roof spoiler.

Johann Zeiler (Mitras/SMC-Alliance) reported on “On-line Painted Decklid of the S-Classe Coupe”. He gave a review of two class-A applications: DC decklid and Ford GOP. Johann made very clear that many improvements where made along the process chain, starting from the design, ending with the painting process. There was a striking slide in his presentation: The coefficient ot thermal elongation (SMC is very similar to steel) - competing thermoplastics are really off-beat! B. Soufflet, M. Recouvreur from Matra Venture Composites/SMC-Alliance: “Class A SMC Body Parts for AVANTIME Technical Chellenges”. The Avantime is planned for 80 to 120 unit a day. Doors, rear fenders, tail gate, roof, side rails are made of SMC: all together 14 class A body parts and 2 structural parts. The “Avantime” is the successor of the “Espace”, the first mini van to use SMC for the entire body (and, by the way, the mini van with the best performance in European crash standards).

Opinions about the Bad Nauheim Meeting:

Michael Sommer from Byk-Chemie/SMC-Alliance:
“Right after Fons Harbers’ paper people flooded the Alliance booth. We distributed our design manual and had very interesting discussions. We’ve learned that many engineers know our material perfectly well, however, some don’t even have a clue about SMC/BMC. “How is it possible that one material can meet so many demands”, was one question. The SMC-Alliance must carry on with educational events like this.”

Konrad Wartenburg from Menzolit-Fibron/SMC-Alliance:
“The lectures on this symposion were very good, especially the second day. The organisation was perfect. There was enough time for discussions and exchange of views. The composition of participants was excellent. I had many talks with important people. This is probably the best meeting place for SMC/BMC, when automotive matters are concerned.”

Johann Zeiler from Mitras/SMC-Alliance:
“SMC makes a very good job, also in exterior class A body parts. However, the OEMs are not fully satisfied yet. Just a few queries: Is the C-emission 100% solved? Is temperature treatment (tempern) necessary or not? How long does the industry need for the next technological advance? How is the future development of costs? How is the price competetiveness vs. aluminium?

Ulrich Fauth from Lonza Compound/SMC-Alliance:
“A good meeting place. A few of the lectures mediocre, many excellent. The OEMs speak a very clear language about their quality demands and their needs for future developments.”
