better household appliances with BMC

Due to the high heat resistance and thanks to the possibility of mass-colouring BMC, this material is used in a number of household appliances. Use of SMC and BMC is very well known in the electrical industry - mainly for applications such as electrical cabinets, lamp housings, distribution boxes etc. Many truck and passenger cars components are also made of SMC or BMC. - Bulk Moulding Compound is now entering the private homes as well.

Iron made of BMC

BMC iron

The group of small household appliances such as handles for furnace, irons, toaster caps, radiators for dry towels all have their special requirements and are preferably made of BMC. These parts have to meet severe requirements:

- heat sources in the vicinity
- mechanical properties at ambient temperature
- mechanical properties during temperature of utilisation
- variety of the colours
- stability of the colours with the temperature and the time
- aspect of surface
- electric insulation
- stable against liquids in the kitchen
- fire resistance

What about competing materials used for appliances?

Metals which hold well in temperature, but have no insulating properties, which restricts their use, and sometimes their behaviour with the liquids causes corrosion problems.
The thermoplastics, easily transformable, but whose thermal behaviour can pose problems. The phenolics which holds well in temperature, but pigmentation is almost impossible.
The BMC brings an interesting answer to all these constraints.

BMC provides the following advantages:

Injection moulding possibility thus making automatisation complete. Good thermal behaviour. Heat distortion temperature (temperature of deformation under load) is higher than 200 °C. Good behaviour with chemical agents used in the house.

Gaufriers made of BMC

All components can stand severe temperature requirements. With the dryer, the heating plate is moulded in, like an insert, during the injection moulding process. The metal insert is “coated” with BMC. The BMC is used as protective coating and electrical insulation. It also provides good mouldability, esthetics, fire retardency and excellent dimensional behaviour.
