Siemens Transportation Systems presented the new Desiro UK 450 train, the first of a total of 132 trains, ordered by
British South West Trains.
For the interior the designers were looking for a lightweight material with excellent mechanical strength and highest flame retardancy that comply with the
UK’s stringent safety requirements.
SMC is a well-established material in the rail industry and it was chosen for a number of interior fittings and fixtures. SMC is the ideal
material offering a unique blend of properties combined with design freedom and the flexibility to integrate functional elements.
For this application Lonza Compounds is producing a
special highly flame-retardant SMC grade in compliance with BS 6853 Class 2, that governs ignitability, spread of flame and smoke evolution.
Various moulders under the control of Romay AG,
Switzerland, are using the SMC to mould window frames, door panels and partition panels. All parts are painted and finished by the moulders.
